KUCHING: The ‘Sarawak For Sarawakians’ group yesterday demonstrated at the Kuching Waterfront in hopes of catching the attention of members of the august House.

On the first day of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday held across the river opposite the Kuching Waterfront, over 20 participants held banners while shouting ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’.

A spokesperson for the group said the protest was aimed at sending signals to members of the State Legislative Assembly to pass a law or referendum to return the rights of the people to express their will.

He said the organisation would be holding another demonstration here on July 22, claiming of bringing a crowd of 5,000 including Sarawakians residing in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, USA and Australia.

He said they would march from Padang Merdeka along Jalan Tikus, Jalan Ban Hock, passing Riverside Shopping Complex before returning to Padang Merdeka.

Around 10am yesterday Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad arrived at the scene, had a conversation with the person in charge for about 15 minutes before leaving.

He said the police were there to provide advice and to make sure they abided by the law.

The demonstrators then dispersed peacefully from the scene after meeting Roslan.
